CHAPTER 8
Unfortunately, by the time they reached Alcove Springs, theyâd discovered that half of their flour in the chuck wagon had gone bad due to the excess of moisture theyâd had between the rain and the river crossing. That made it so that they had to live on slimmer rations during the two weeks until they made it to Fort Kearney. And once there, two more wagons turned back and two decided to stay at the fort and not continue on.
Dorothy was standing next to Elias when Mr. Cooper came by the morning they were departing Kearney, with his brow furrowed and his thumbs shoved in his belt on both sides. âMorning, folks. I came to assess how everyone is doing. Weâve acquired more supplies here at the fort and the sun is bright in the sky. With Godâs blessing, weâre hoping to have smooth travels for a while. Normally we donât have such a rough start to the trip so itâs unusual to have many people turn back so early on the trail.â
Elias offered the man a hand to shake. âWeâre in for the full haul so no worries here.â
A measure of relief lowered the manâs shoulders as he took Eliasâs hand. âThatâs good to hear. Since yâall are in the back of the train, I know that youâre seeing everyone that leaves, and if you decide to leave, Iâd just ask that you let me know so weâre not looking for you.â
âUnderstood,â Elias said and then met eyes with Dorothy.
She nodded in return. âSo, itâs not normally this bad at the start?â
The old wagon master shook his head. âIâve made this trip coming on ten times and this is the worst start weâve ever had. Usually, the trek is pretty smooth and easy for the first few months until we get closer to the mountains.â
A familiar fear crept up inside Dorothy again, and she could understand the motive for turning back. If this was supposed to be the easiest part of the journey and itâd been this bad already, it was easy to fear what would be coming next.
The wagon masterâs son called him from a short distance up the train. âWell, remember what I said, and pray that we get a better journey from here out.â
âWe will,â both Elias and she said at the same time. And then they settled in with each other once more. Elias turned to her and said, âI know that God is calling me to preach His word and spread the gospel out west. Iâve had a vision for it for months now, before I started this journey. But sometimes there are storms on the way that we cannot predict, and the adversary often tries to put stumbling blocks in our paths so that weâll turn back. But provided that you are determined to move forward, then so am I.â
Reaching a hand forward, she then took hold of his arm and squeezed it to reassure him. âIâm afraid of what lies ahead, but I know that God is already there.
